Monteloeder unveils new preclinical findings on Elissara® for hair growth

In a groundbreaking study, Monteloeder, a subsidiary of SuanNutra, has unveiled new preclinical findings indicating that its nutricosmetic, Elissara®, could play a significant role in supporting hair growth and resilience. The research, which was published in the August 2026 issue of Biomolecules, demonstrates that Elissara® has multifaceted activity beneficial for hair health, extending beyond the scalp to the hair follicle itself.

The study involved laboratory assessments of human dermal papilla cells and scalp tissue samples exposed to environmental stressors such as pollution and UV light. Results showed that Elissara® influenced multiple biological pathways associated with healthy follicle function and the hair growth cycle. In one key experiment, the ingredient increased cell proliferation in dermal papilla cells to approximately 2.5 times that of untreated controls.

Elissara® was also found to increase both collagen and signaling proteins associated with healthy hair-follicle function, including markers involved in cell proliferation, structural support, and follicular signaling. Notably, the ingredient helped preserve growth-signalling IGF-1 protein levels under environmental stress, and reduced markers of oxidative damage in scalp tissue exposed to PM2.5 pollution and UVA-induced stress.

Elissara® is a proprietary combination of four herbs, lemon verbena (Lippia citriodora), olive leaf (Olea europaea), Japanese pagoda tree (Styphnolobium japonicum), and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis). It contains a specific fingerprint of bioactive compounds, including verbascoside, oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, quercetin, and carnosol and carnosic acid from rosemary. These compounds provide a broad spectrum of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.

The initial development of Elissara® was as a natural inner beauty botanical formula to support the skin against pollution and UV exposure. It later exhibited scalp health benefits in a clinical study involving 66 women, where daily oral supplementation significantly improved scalp moisturization and hydration, reduced sebum levels, and scalp redness. Almost 80% of participants reported healthier-looking hair, and 76% noted enhanced shine. Close to 80% of them also reported that their hair felt stronger.
