Michael Garron Hospital and Centennial College have announced a groundbreaking partnership aimed at addressing the growing demand for healthcare professionals in Ontario. The collaboration, which will run for five years, is designed to enhance the education and workforce development of the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Michael Garron Hospital, a community teaching hospital in East Toronto, has been serving the community for nearly 100 years. The hospital is known for providing compassionate and excellent care to over 400,000 people across 22 distinct neighbourhoods. For more than 90 years, MGH has been a cornerstone of healthcare in the region, delivering patient-centred services from welcoming new lives to addressing end-of-life care.

Centennial College, founded in 1966 and Ontario's first public college, will collaborate with MGH to create new opportunities for academic and professional exchange. The partnership will focus on workforce development in a healthcare setting, clinical placements for Centennial students, and strengthening learning and curriculum development with an emphasis on simulation-based education and practice-based research collaborations.

According to the Stokes Labour Market Study (2026), projections indicate strong and sustained demand for health occupations across Ontario, expected to generate approximately 133,942 job openings between 2026 and 2035. This demand underscores the importance of the partnership between MGH and Centennial College, as it aims to prepare students for careers in fields where demand is growing.

Dr. Melanie Kohn, President and CEO of Michael Garron Hospital, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership.

Dr. Craig Stephenson, President and CEO of Centennial College, echoed Kohn's sentiments.

Mikki Layton, Vice President of Professional Practice, Programs, Scholarship, and Chief Nursing Executive at Michael Garron Hospital, highlighted the practical benefits of the partnership.

The partnership will prepare students for careers in various fields, including nursing, health disciplines, and medical imaging. Centennial College offers a range of programs through its Faculty of Integrated Health and Community Care, from healthcare and public safety to child and family studies and community services.

Véronique Henry, Dean of the Faculty of Integrated Health and Community Care at Centennial College, emphasized the importance of the collaboration.

The partnership will also support research collaboration through Centennial's Wearable, Interactive and Mobile Technology Access Centre in Health (WIMTACH). This initiative aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensuring that students are well-prepared to meet the evolving needs of the healthcare industry.

Through this collaboration, Michael Garron Hospital and Centennial College are taking a significant step towards addressing the growing demand for healthcare professionals in Ontario. The partnership represents a commitment to education and the provision of high-quality care to the communities they serve.
