Melissa Rivers, the renowned fashion expert and television host, will make her long-awaited return to the red carpet at the 78th Emmy Awards. This marks her first appearance on the carpet in nearly two decades, joining CNN and Variety for live coverage of the star-studded event on Monday, September 14.
Rivers, who gained prominence alongside her mother, Joan Rivers, as a pioneer in red-carpet fashion commentary, will bring her signature wit and expert eye to the evening's festivities. She will team up with CNN Correspondent Elizabeth Wagmeister and Variety co-president and co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh for the live special, "CNN & Variety Red Carpet Live: TV's Biggest Night." The special will begin at 5 p.m. ET and stream live at CNN.com/Watch and on the CNN app for subscribers.
Rivers expressed a mix of excitement and trepidation about her return. "It's a little surreal to think that I'm returning to the red carpet nearly 20 years later," she said. "I'm excited to be back on the red carpet with CNN and Variety, but to be honest, I'm slightly terrified. Fashion has changed, the red carpet has changed, and I've definitely changed. In my opinion, red carpets have gotten a little too serious over the last few years and I hope to bring some of that fun back."
The event, which is the first major activation of CNN and Variety's expanded partnership, aims to combine CNN's global reach and multiplatform audience with Variety's entertainment industry expertise. CNN & Variety Red Carpet Live: TV's Biggest Night will feature commentary and interviews with the stars and creators behind the year's most celebrated television shows and performances.
"This is a full-circle career moment for Melissa," said Setoodeh. "She and her mother were the first ones to turn walking the red carpet into an event, and now she's coming back to the carpet in a new chapter of her own. We're excited to have her join us and bring her unique perspective to the evening."
Rivers has built a career spanning decades in entertainment, pop culture, and red-carpet coverage. Known for her candid humor, sharp perspective, and deep knowledge of fashion and entertainment, she continues to appear across national television, digital media, and podcasts. Her return to the Emmy Awards represents a significant moment in the evolution of red-carpet coverage, where fashion and entertainment intersect to create unforgettable moments for viewers.
