Matisse Pharmaceuticals, a clinical stage company based in Geleen, the Netherlands, has secured €14 million in Series A financing to advance its isupartob sodium through phase 2 clinical development. The funding, led by existing and new shareholders, including Brightlands Venture Partners and LIOF, as well as private investors and management, will primarily be used to execute the Phase 2 clinical trial of isupartob sodium, a key milestone for the company.
Isupartob sodium is a novel therapeutic designed to neutralize extracellular histones, which are key mediators of endothelial injury, inflammation, and organ failure in sepsis. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), sepsis is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with over 49 million cases annually and more than 20% of patients succumbing to the condition. The therapy aims to reduce mortality and improve outcomes in critically ill patients by targeting the upstream mechanism in the inflammatory cascade.
Marcel Jacobs, Chief Executive Officer of Matisse Pharmaceuticals, expressed gratitude for the continued commitment of existing shareholders and the welcome of new investors.
The Phase 2 study is expected to provide critical data on the safety, tolerability, and clinical activity of isupartob in sepsis patients, which will inform Matisse's subsequent development strategy. The company was founded in 2014 and has been developing safe and innovative therapies for disease indications characterized by elevated levels of circulating cytotoxic histones, including sepsis.
The financing round is structured to allow Matisse Pharmaceuticals to broaden its shareholder base with long-term investors while maintaining strategic flexibility as it advances toward its next clinical milestones. The company's long-term investor syndicate now includes a mix of institutional and private investors, further strengthening its financial position.
Matisse Pharmaceuticals is committed to addressing the significant unmet medical need in critical care medicine, particularly in sepsis. Despite decades of research, no targeted therapies have been successfully developed to address the dysregulated host response that drives organ failure and death in sepsis. The company's innovative approach aims to provide a much-needed treatment option for sepsis patients, potentially saving lives and improving patient outcomes.
The completion of the Phase 2 study is expected to provide important data that could position Matisse Pharmaceuticals to create significant value for patients, partners, and shareholders alike. The company remains focused on its mission to develop safe and effective therapies for sepsis and other critical conditions.
