Haitian-American author Malou Beauvoir has expanded her children's book series, OUR VODOU, with the introduction of Book 2, titled "Haiti, Land of Mountains." This new installment in the series aims to celebrate Haiti's rich heritage and cultural traditions through the eyes of young Akiko, who arrives in Haiti with his mother and discovers the country's breathtaking landscapes and ancient wisdom.
The OUR VODOU series, which began with "OUR VODOU: A Vodou Bedtime Tale," continues to grow. The first book in the series, available in English, French, and Haitian Creole, has already introduced young readers to the origins of Haiti and the significance of Vodou. The second book, "Haiti, Land of Mountains," is now available in English and is set to be released in French and Haitian Creole editions in January 2027.
Beauvoir introduced Book 2 at the 2026 edition of Haitian Ladies Weekend: Igniting Our Power, a celebration of Haitian culture, creativity, and community held in Washington, D.C. from October 2 to 4. During the event, she participated in the 20th Signature Brunch, opening the brunch with a performance of the Haitian national anthem. This event, which featured four new authors, including Beauvoir, highlighted the importance of storytelling and cultural preservation.
The OUR VODOU series is more than just a collection of books; it is a mission to make Haitian heritage accessible to children and families. Through imaginative storytelling and vivid illustrations, the series encourages curiosity, cultural pride, and a respectful understanding of Vodou, a tradition that is often misunderstood. The books are part of a larger effort to connect younger generations with their cultural roots and promote intergenerational dialogue.
In addition to the books, the OUR VODOU series includes standalone coloring books in English and Haitian Creole, available in standard and premium formats. These coloring books complement the storytelling and provide a creative outlet for young readers to engage with the rich cultural heritage of Haiti.
Beauvoir's work with the OUR VODOU series is part of her broader mission as a cultural advocate. Through her creative work in music, literature, and fashion, she seeks to share Haiti's history, cultural richness, and ancestral traditions with younger generations. This story will continue Akiko's journey as he grows older and introduces young readers to Boukman and Cécile Fatiman, two figures associated with the historic Bois Caïman ceremony of 1791.
The complete collection, including multilingual editions and coloring books, is available for purchase at https://www.ourvodou.com. Readers can also follow the series on social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.
