Madison Energy Infrastructure Launches 1 GW Community Infrastructure Initiative

Madison Energy Infrastructure has announced a significant expansion of its Community Infrastructure initiative, aiming to develop an additional 1 gigawatt (GW) of distributed energy capacity by 2028. The company plans to mobilize up to $2 billion in capital to support this ambitious project, which is driven by the growing demand for power to fuel the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) and data centers.
To date, Madison has already deployed solar and energy storage solutions in collaboration with businesses, utilities, data centers, and municipalities. The company has completed or is in the process of developing over 600 projects across more than 30 states, showcasing its commitment to bringing clean energy solutions closer to communities.
Notable projects include a 50 MW standalone energy storage facility with CORE Electric Cooperative in Colorado, designed to help the utility meet rising demand and emission reduction goals. Another project involves a 13 MW solar plus 8.75 MW energy storage installation in Michigan, serving the City of Niles at the Jerry Tyler Memorial Airport. This project is expected to provide significant lifetime savings to the municipality.
In the aviation sector, Madison is constructing a 16 MW solar project at Denver International Airport, supporting one of the largest aviation hubs in the country. Additionally, a 27 MW offsite solar project is nearing completion in Pennsylvania, serving a national industrial client as a hedge against rising electricity prices in the PJM territory.
Madison's CEO, Richard Walsh, emphasized the importance of building trust and value with communities through distributed local infrastructure.
The initiative also highlights the growing partnership between Madison and EdgeConneX, a data center developer.
Alex Darden, Head of EQT Infrastructure, Americas, further underscored the importance of addressing the growing power availability challenges. "Power availability is increasingly the gating factor for how fast AI infrastructure can scale, and that pressure is further straining local grids. Community Infrastructure will help deliver reliable, affordable energy for communities in partnership with AI infrastructure developers as this buildout accelerates."
As Madison continues to expand its energy infrastructure footprint, the company aims to leverage its utility relationships, market expertise, and national project pipeline to achieve its goal of doubling its energy infrastructure capacity in two years.
