Lyntris completes CDR for Hyperion tri-band antenna system

Lyntris Inc., a leading defense technology company, has completed a critical milestone in the development of Kongsberg Satellite Services' (KSAT) next-generation Hyperion satellite mission. The completion of the Critical Design Review (CDR) for the tri-band antenna system is a significant step forward as the program advances towards hardware integration and qualification.

The tri-band antenna system is a crucial component of KSAT’s Hyperion mission, which is designed to serve as a pathfinder for the company’s next-generation hybrid RF and optical relay network. This architecture aims to extend global connectivity into orbit, enabling spacecraft to relay mission-critical data when direct ground-station access is unavailable, thus reducing latency and enhancing the access to time-sensitive information.

Achieving tri-band performance in a single antenna system is a challenging engineering task. Each frequency band must be meticulously controlled to filter out unwanted signals, isolate the bands from one another, and minimize signal loss. However, optimizing for one band can easily degrade performance in another. Meeting these requirements for all three bands simultaneously, within a compact, space-qualified envelope, leaves little margin for error.

The transition from RF engineering to flight hardware adds another layer of complexity. The completed system must be validated in test facilities capable of characterizing performance across all three bands simultaneously. Few organizations maintain such capabilities in-house, making this a notable achievement for Lyntris.
