Lutzie 43 Foundation Hosts Safe Driving Summit at Habersham Central High School

The Lutzie 43 Foundation is set to host a Safe Driving Summit at Habersham Central High School on September 22, aiming to educate students on the dangers of distracted, impaired, and unsafe driving. Sponsored by Bulldog Kia, the event will feature a series of sessions led by law enforcement, first responders, trauma care specialists, and commercial truck drivers.
The summit, which will run from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., is part of the Lutzie 43 Foundation’s ongoing mission to promote safe driving behaviors. Founded in memory of Philip Lutzenkirchen, a former Auburn University football player who tragically lost his life in a single-vehicle crash caused by distracted, impaired, and unsafe driving, the foundation’s 43 Key Seconds initiative seeks to raise awareness and prevent such incidents.
Key components of the summit include a keynote address by Mike Lutzenkirchen, the foundation’s executive director. Lutzenkirchen will share the story of his son and the foundation’s mission to honor his memory. Following the keynote, students will participate in breakout sessions that cover various aspects of safe driving. These sessions will be led by experts from the Georgia Department of Public Safety Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, the Mt. Airy Police Department, Northeast Georgia Health System, Wellstar Trauma Network, and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
Additionally, students will have the opportunity to experience the perspective of a truck driver by stepping inside an 80,000-pound tractor trailer. This session, presented by FedEx Freight, Walmart, and the Georgia Department of Public Safety Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, will provide students with a firsthand look at the challenges and responsibilities of professional driving, including blind spots and stopping distances.
Dr. Adam Bagwell, principal of Habersham Central High School, expressed confidence that the summit would benefit the students.
The 43 Key Seconds initiative emphasizes the importance of having a clear head, clear hands, clear eyes, and clicking the seatbelt. These simple steps can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and ensure a safer driving experience for everyone.
The summit is part of the Lutzie 43 Foundation’s broader efforts to reach tens of thousands of students across the Southeast. Since 2022, the foundation has presented 40+ Safe Driving Summits, contributing to a safer driving culture among young drivers.
By providing students with an eye-opening experience and practical tools, the Lutzie 43 Foundation aims to instill a lifelong commitment to safe driving practices.
