BANGKOK, BANGKOK, THAILAND, October 13, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Lumiere, the sovereign carbon registry of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is set to address a critical shortfall in emissions units for the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). The registry, which is currently in discussions with airlines, climate finance institutions, and aviation sector specialists, aims to supply approximately 150 million units to meet the aviation industry's needs.

These discussions are taking place during the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group, held in Bangkok from October 12 to 18, 2026. Ivano Iannelli, Project Director at Lumiere SAS, the company operating the registry, is representing Lumiere at the event.

Industry reports from September 2026 indicate that approximately 72 million CORSIA-compatible emissions units were covered by Letters of Authorisation issued by host countries as of August 2026. This leaves a significant gap of around 150 million units to be filled by January 2028, the deadline for the first compliance period of CORSIA.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo holds one of the largest intact tropical forest estates on earth, and the Congo Basin is often described as the second lung of the planet. Lumiere was established to provide a sovereign, publicly visible system of record for environmental assets associated with the country, enabling the tracking, authorisation, and transaction of emissions units under internationally recognised frameworks.

Lumiere is not disclosing exact volumes, vintages, or pricing at this stage but is benchmarking a few lots of 3-5 million units each. The registry intends to engage with a limited number of counterparties initially and will prioritize those able to engage directly with the registry and its operating team. Further lots will be launched at a dedicated event during COP31.

Airlines, aviation groups, financial institutions, and other parties interested in the units available through the registry are invited to visit Lumiere or to contact the registry directly to learn more.
