CHICAGO, IL, UNITED STATES, October 12, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Liz’s Ark, a pending 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is developing a new housing initiative on Chicago’s South Side for domestic violence survivors and adults who have aged out of the foster care system. The unique aspect of this project is that it will be pet-inclusive, allowing residents to bring their pets along for the journey to safety and stability.
The initiative was inspired by the personal experiences of the founders, Maribelle and Asha Martinez. Maribelle, who stepped in to raise Elizabeth Martinez's three children after her sister's tragic death, gained a deep understanding of the challenges faced by families affected by domestic violence. This experience led to the creation of Liz’s Ark, named in memory of Elizabeth Martinez Marquez.
The founders of Liz’s Ark became increasingly aware of the gap in support for individuals in crisis who cannot bring their pets with them. Many shelters, transitional housing programs, and residential facilities do not accommodate animals, forcing people to make an impossible choice between leaving a dangerous situation and abandoning their pets. Liz’s Ark aims to eliminate this choice by providing a supportive environment where residents can rebuild their lives with the animals they love.
The planned residence will serve domestic violence survivors and adults transitioning out of the foster care system. The founders envision a supportive setting where residents can begin to regain their independence, stability, and sense of home while remaining connected to the animals that have often accompanied them through difficult times.
The project is being sponsored in part by IC en Scene, an organization focused on advocacy, safety, education, in film and fashion, while creating more respectful environments for individuals experiencing vulnerable circumstances. As Liz’s Ark moves forward with its nonprofit development and launch, the organization is actively seeking donors, sponsors, community partners, foundations, businesses, and individuals who would like to help bring the project to life.
The initiative is designed to provide pet-friendly accommodations, operations, programming, and resources for future residents. Liz’s Ark is committed to creating a safe and supportive environment for both people and animals, ensuring that individuals seeking safety and stability can do so without the added burden of making difficult choices.
