LiCAP introduces ultracapacitor system for AI data centers

LiCAP Technologies Inc., a leader in advanced ultracapacitor and electrode technology, has introduced a new Rack Level Ultracapacitor Energy Storage System specifically tailored for the demanding power requirements of AI data centers. This system is designed to address the high-power, fast-response needs of these centers, which are witnessing rapid growth driven by GPU-intensive workloads.

The new system, built upon LiCAP’s ultracapacitor cells and modules, provides a robust solution for managing sudden power demands. According to the company, the rack-level systems are engineered to respond within milliseconds to AI workload transients, voltage disturbances, and other short-duration power events. This capability is critical in today’s data centers, where traditional backup systems like batteries and generators struggle to meet the high-power, rapid charge-and-discharge cycles required by modern AI computing.

Richard Qiu, President of LiCAP Technologies, emphasized the importance of this development: “AI is fundamentally changing the data center power landscape. Not only do data centers need sufficient backup energy, but they also require infrastructure capable of responding swiftly to dramatic changes in power loads. Ultracapacitors excel at handling these high-power, short-duration events, complementing other energy storage solutions.”

The ultracapacitor systems are designed to offer over one million cycles with a service life of more than 15 years, and near-zero maintenance, making them ideal for frequent high-power cycling. They can be customized to meet specific voltage, power, energy, runtime, and physical integration requirements, and can be integrated with a Cabinet Management System for real-time monitoring.

The new systems serve multiple applications, including AI power transient support, voltage sag support, bridge power, shutdown protection, and battery support. They can absorb or deliver power during sudden workload changes, respond quickly to voltage disturbances, provide immediate power during grid interruptions, ensure data integrity during unexpected power outages, and handle high-power transient loads to extend the life of batteries.

LiCAP's Activated Dry Electrode® (ADE) manufacturing technology is a key component of its ultracapacitor systems. This patented technology eliminates the use of NMP solvent and associated drying and solvent-recovery steps, resulting in low internal resistance and leakage current, which enhances the rapid response and efficiency of the ultracapacitors.

LiCAP will showcase its ultracapacitor technology and products at industry events, including Battery & Energy Storage Tech Europe in Barcelona from September 8-9, 2026, and The Battery Show North America in Detroit from October 12-15, 2026.
