Leading Edge Materials Launches Drilling Program to Test Larger Graphite System

Leading Edge Materials Corp. has announced plans to commence a drilling programme at its Woxna Graphite Project in Sweden, aiming to test whether three separate graphite occurrences are part of a larger, connected regional system. This initiative seeks to extend the resource growth potential at Woxna, a fully built and permitted natural flake graphite mine in Europe.

The programme, set to begin on September 8, 2026, involves five diamond drill holes to explore the Kringeltjärn, Råttjärnamyren, and Svartboberget graphite occurrences. Historical drilling data indicate a thick graphite-bearing sequence at depth at Svartboberget, while geophysical survey data collected in the 1980s and 1990s point to potential continuity toward Råttjärnamyren and Kringeltjärn. These findings support the hypothesis that the three occurrences could be part of a larger, interconnected graphite-bearing system.

The Kringeltjärn’s eastern extension, Råttjärnamyren to the north-west, and Svartboberget are being tested for their potential to form a single, larger graphite system. The drilling programme will also evaluate conductive anomalies indicated by geophysical data, which may suggest the presence of graphite-bearing rock at shallower depths. These anomalies are considered priority targets for the drilling campaign.

The European Union's push for increased domestic sourcing of critical raw materials, including graphite, underpins the strategic importance of this exploration. The Swedish Government's new Mineral Strategy, which places critical raw materials and mining at the centre of the country's industrial and national security policy, further supports the advancement of projects such as Woxna.

Graphite is a key component in battery technology and is expected to experience strong demand growth. According to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, global demand for natural flake graphite is forecast to rise from approximately 1.3 million tonnes in 2026 to around 2.7 million tonnes by 2036, more than doubling within a decade. China currently dominates the supply chain, accounting for about 70% of global natural graphite mine production, over 80% of spherical graphite processing capacity, and more than 90% of global anode manufacturing capacity. The recent suspension of graphite dual-use export controls by China, effective until November 27, 2026, has only temporarily eased near-term trade tensions but does not address the underlying reliance on Chinese supply.

Against this backdrop, the European Union's target of sourcing at least 10% of its strategic raw material consumption domestically by 2030 adds urgency to the exploration efforts. Leading Edge Materials' drilling programme at Woxna is a crucial step in this direction. The company plans to use the net proceeds from its ongoing private placement to advance its projects and support environmental permitting for the Norra Kärr Heavy Rare Earth Elements Project, as well as studies related to the potential restart of the Woxna Graphite mine and processing plant.
