AWAJI CITY, HYOGO PREFECTURE, JAPAN, October 9, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Kobe-Awaji Island Gastronomy Association has signed a significant partnership agreement with Michelin, marking the selection of the region as a new destination for the prestigious MICHELIN Guide. The agreement, signed on September 16, 2026, aims to highlight the rich culinary heritage and tourism potential of the Kobe-Awaji Island area.

Established in March 2026, the Kobe-Awaji Island Gastronomy Association was formed with the primary goal of promoting tourism and regional development. The association seeks to share the distinctive food culture of the area, the initiatives of local producers and businesses, and the region's culinary appeal with audiences both in Japan and overseas. This partnership with Michelin is expected to bring increased attention to the area, potentially boosting tourism and economic growth.

The Kobe-Awaji Island area has a long history as a global port, opening in the 19th century. Over the years, the region has developed a diverse food culture through interactions with various cultures, leading to a unique culinary identity that blends Japanese, Western, and Chinese cuisines. Awaji Island, known historically as Miketsukuni, has been a source of bountiful food for the Imperial Court, and today, the island is renowned for its agricultural, livestock, and marine products.

Despite its rich culinary heritage, the region remains underrecognized both domestically and internationally. The establishment of the Kobe-Awaji Island Gastronomy Association is a step towards changing this narrative. The association is working closely with the Council for the Promotion of a World-Class Food Destination to develop initiatives that will position Kobe and Awaji Island as a global food destination. Through this collaboration, the association aims to enhance the region's culinary brand value and attract visitors from around the world.

The MICHELIN Guide, known for its rigorous selection process and high standards, will feature the Kobe-Awaji Island area, highlighting the best culinary experiences the region has to offer. This recognition is expected to draw more domestic and inbound tourists, potentially benefiting local businesses and producers. The partnership also includes plans to develop new initiatives that connect food and tourism, further promoting the unique experiences available in the region.

The association's members, including full and supporting members, are committed to the success of this initiative. Full members include S.T. Corporation, The Kobe Shimbun, G CUBE CO., LTD., Junsei Educational Institution, and Pasona Group Inc. Supporting members consist of ASAHI BREWERIES, LTD., Awaji Shinkin Bank, Uzunokuni Minamiawaji Co., Ltd., G LION GROUP, Joyport Awajishima Inc., WEST JAPAN RAILWAY COMPANY, Nichifutsu Shoji Co., Ltd., HOSHIZAKI HANSIN CO., LTD., and Minato Bank, Ltd.

The MICHELIN Guide, which features over 17,000 restaurants worldwide, will help to preserve and promote the food culture and gastronomy of the region, contributing to the future of local communities. The selection of Kobe-Awaji Island for the guide is a testament to the region's culinary excellence and its potential to become a global food destination.
