Intermountain Health to Build New LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City, UT, Intermountain Health has announced plans to construct a new LDS Hospital in downtown Salt Lake City, marking a significant investment in the city's healthcare infrastructure and reaffirming the organization's commitment to serving the community for generations.

Located on an approximately eight-acre site at 745 South State Street, previously home to the Sears retail store which closed in 2018, the new hospital will be a cornerstone of a major downtown development. The facility is designed to provide a modern, patient-centered environment that meets the evolving healthcare needs of Salt Lake County, South Davis County, and the broader Intermountain region.

"We're thrilled to bring a modern, urban hospital to Salt Lake City's downtown area, supporting our vibrant community and the entire city with improved access to world-class healthcare," said Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall.

The new hospital will span 10 stories and encompass over 521,000 square feet, including a seven-story medical office building. It will feature advanced technology, flexible clinical spaces, and welcoming healing environments, with a signature atrium and dedicated respite areas to offer patients, families, and caregivers spaces for reflection and renewal.

"Construction planning and development activities are currently underway, with site preparation for the building project in progress," said Heather Wall, president of Intermountain LDS Hospital. "This project is about preparing healthcare for the future while honoring more than 100 years of service to the community."

The new facility will include a full-service emergency department, behavioral health access center, imaging center, ambulatory surgery center, pharmacy, laboratory, dialysis center, intensive care unit, orthopedic services, neurology, cardiology, pulmonary medicine, rehabilitation services, gastroenterology, urology, wound care, and other specialty programs. The hospital will also feature an advanced Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, personalized birthing suites, and maternal-fetal medicine services.

"Services will be designed to support parents before and after childbirth, ensuring that patients receive the highest quality care," said Wall.

The new hospital is expected to strengthen the regional economy, supporting approximately 2,000 jobs and generating more than $1.1 billion in annual local economic impact. It will also continue Intermountain LDS Hospital's longstanding commitment to specialized care for women, newborns, and families.

While the new hospital will expand access and enhance patient care, Intermountain Health is still considering the future use of the current Intermountain LDS Hospital campus in the Avenues after the new hospital opens. The existing facility will continue to serve as a full-service community hospital until a long-term plan is determined.

"Construction planning and development activities for the new downtown campus are currently underway," said Wall. "Additional details regarding project milestones and timelines will be announced as they become available later this year."
