IDnow, Europe's leading provider of digital identity and fraud prevention solutions, has released the findings of its EUDI Wallet Consumer Survey, offering insights into consumer attitudes toward the upcoming December 2026 launch of the EUDI Wallet. The survey, conducted among 2,000 adults in France and Germany, highlights a cautious optimism among consumers regarding the new digital identity tool, as well as the challenges it faces in gaining widespread adoption.
According to IDnow, current identity verification processes are far from perfect, with 46% of respondents indicating they often abandon transactions when the process is too complex or lengthy. This reveals a significant opportunity for the EUDI Wallet to improve the user experience. The survey also found that security and transparency are paramount concerns. Forty percent of respondents said better protection against fraud is the most critical factor for using the EUDI Wallet, while nearly a third (31%) emphasized the importance of having greater control over the data they share and the ability to track its usage. Just 28% cited faster and simpler processes as key.
The benefits of the EUDI Wallet are clear: 47% of consumers would accept additional identity checks if they increased security, even if it meant a longer verification process. Only 13% would opt for fewer checks if the risk of fraud increased. Additionally, 63% of consumers would be more likely to use the EUDI Wallet if it allowed them to share only the necessary information to confirm certain details, such as their age, without revealing all their data. This selective disclosure feature is seen as a key differentiator.
However, the adoption of the EUDI Wallet is unlikely to happen overnight. The survey reveals that consumers are still divided on their preferred method of identity verification, with 24% preferring in-person verification, 14% favoring a digital identity wallet, 13% opting for an NFC chip, 11% preferring to submit an ID along with a selfie, and 10% favoring a video call with an agent. This diversity suggests that financial institutions will need to provide flexible onboarding options to cater to individual preferences.
IDnow’s CEO, Philippe Morel, comments, “European consumers understand the problem the EUDI Wallet is designed to solve, but they have not yet been convinced that it is the solution. They know that identity fraud is on the rise, that online verification is broken, and that sharing more data than necessary carries real risks. What they have not yet seen is a solution they can trust, and that is the gap the EUDI Wallet must close.”
The EUDI Wallet Consumer Survey, titled "The Identity Gap," provides a detailed analysis of current habits regarding digital identity, consumer expectations, security and privacy concerns, barriers to adoption, and attitudes toward future use cases. The findings suggest that while there is a clear need for improved identity verification methods, the EUDI Wallet faces significant hurdles in winning consumer trust and acceptance.
IDnow’s Trust Platform, recently launched, aims to address some of these challenges by providing unified access to identity verification, fraud prevention, biometric authentication, and qualified digital trust services. The platform is designed to help businesses operate securely while driving growth and scalability. With the EUDI Wallet set to launch in December 2026, IDnow is positioning itself as a key player in transforming trust into a powerful asset in the digital world.
