Hyster Delivers UK's First Hydrogen Fuel Cell-Powered ReachStacker to Port of Tilbury

TILBURY, UK, Sept. 17, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Hyster, a leading provider of forklift trucks and container handling solutions, has delivered the United Kingdom's first hydrogen fuel cell-powered ReachStacker to the Port of Tilbury. This marks a significant milestone in the port's transition to more sustainable operations.

The ReachStacker, a specialized container handler, is powered by a Nuvera 60kW fuel cell engine that converts hydrogen into electricity. This system powers a 130kWh lithium-ion battery, ensuring the machine can operate efficiently throughout a full 12-hour shift. The hydrogen fuel cell technology is expected to reduce the Port of Tilbury's carbon footprint by more than 107,000 kilograms of CO2 per year.

The project, a collaboration between Hyster, Briggs Equipment UK, and the Port of Tilbury, builds on insights from previous pilot programs. The Port of Tilbury, part of the Forth Ports Group, aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2042. This initiative is part of the group's broader strategy to decarbonize its operations and transition to more sustainable port logistics.

The hydrogen fuel cell ReachStacker is designed to deliver 100% green hydrogen-powered heavy lifting capability. High-pressure tanks on board store 32kg of hydrogen, providing long run times and operational productivity. The machine can be refueled in less than 30 minutes, making it a practical solution for demanding port operations.

David Housden, Head of Engineering and Procurement at the Port of Tilbury, emphasized the significance of this project.

Lucien Robroek, President of Global Big Trucks at Hyster, highlighted the importance of developing a solution that meets the rigorous demands of port operations.

The project is supported by on-site green hydrogen production, supply, and refueling infrastructure from GeoPura. This infrastructure ensures that the hydrogen fuel cell technology can be seamlessly integrated into the port's operations. Briggs Equipment UK, a long-standing partner of the Port of Tilbury, will provide front-line service and maintenance support for the ReachStacker. Hyster's Hypercare program will deliver enhanced factory backing for this innovative application.

The Port of Tilbury's commitment to sustainability is evident in its partnership with Hyster and Briggs Equipment UK. The hydrogen fuel cell ReachStacker is expected to help the port demonstrate a lower CO2 emissions footprint, contributing to its goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2042.
