Horizon Aircraft Tests Ice Protection Tech for Cavorite X7

Horizon Aircraft, a leading Canadian aerospace company, has taken a significant step toward certifying its Cavorite X7 as an all-weather Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) aircraft. The company, in collaboration with the Flight Test Centre of Excellence (3C) and the University of Toronto, has begun testing ice protection technologies aimed at ensuring the aircraft can operate safely in harsh weather conditions.

On July 1, 2026, wind tunnel testing commenced on small samples featuring UofT's anti-icing technologies, marking the first step in evaluating their viability on the Cavorite X7. The project is part of a $10.5 million initiative funded by the INSAT, bringing together the expertise of 3C and UofT to support Horizon Aircraft’s goal of achieving Flight Into Known Icing (FIKI) certification.

Dr. John Maris, Founder of 3C, expressed confidence in the combined efforts, stating, "With the Cavorite X7, we are addressing the challenges posed by harsh climates. The combination of the X7’s design, 3C’s certification expertise, and UofT's technology will enable us to achieve FIKI certification and provide reliable year-round regional air mobility."

Currently, many northern and isolated communities in Canada and around the world rely on helicopters for critical services, but these aircraft are frequently grounded due to poor weather conditions. The Cavorite X7, designed with Canadian winters in mind, aims to offer a safer and more reliable solution.

The Flight Test Centre of Excellence (3C) is Canada's sole Transport Canada-approved independent flight test and certification organization. Established by Marinvent Corporation, 3C specializes in flight test, certification, R&D, and emerging aerospace technology innovation. The company's capabilities and access to intellectual property from sister companies ensure comprehensive support for the Cavorite X7's certification process.

Horizon Aircraft, based in Canada and listed on NASDAQ under the ticker HOVR, is developing one of the world’s first hybrid-electric VTOL aircraft.
