Helen Woodward Animal Center hosted its annual Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon, a unique event that combines surfing with a charitable cause. This year’s event, which took place on a sunny day at the beach, featured dogs of all sizes and shapes showing off their surfing skills in 10-minute heats.

Canine competitors, ranging from small terriers to larger breeds, showcased their abilities before a panel of surf professionals and enthusiasts. Judges evaluated the dogs based on their ride length, wave technique, enthusiasm, and confidence on the board. Winners in each weight class were crowned, with the top dogs advancing to the Best-In-Surf finals.

In addition to the main competition, the event included a Freestyle Surf Contest, where creativity was the key. Two popular categories were the Duos & Trios, where two or even three dogs shared a surfboard, and the Peeps & Pups Tandem Competition, where dogs and their human companions surfed together.

The day was filled with family-friendly activities, including a special ceremony honoring Surf Dog legends Sugar, Faith, and Delilah. Attendees also looked forward to the awards ceremony, where the top dogs received their well-deserved honors.

Proceeds from the Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon support Helen Woodward Animal Center’s lifesaving work, providing a second chance for orphan pets. The event not only raises funds but also celebrates the bond between dogs and humans.

The event was live-streamed on Facebook, allowing viewers to watch the competition from the comfort of their homes. For those who couldn’t make it to the beach, the live stream provided a way to stay engaged and support the cause.

Helen Woodward Animal Center, founded in 1972, has been dedicated to helping both people and animals. The center offers a range of services, including adoptions, educational and therapeutic programs, and community outreach. The Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon is just one of the many ways the organization raises awareness and funds for its mission.

With every wave ridden, the dogs not only had fun but also contributed to a greater cause. The event showcased the incredible talents of the participating dogs and highlighted the importance of supporting animal welfare organizations.
