Harris Institute Plans Final Celebration Before Closing Doors

The Harris Institute, a private college known for its contributions to the music industry, will close its doors after 37 years of operation. The decision comes in the wake of several restrictive measures imposed by the Ontario government, including the zeroing out of student visas for private colleges, a freeze on student loan payments, and the elimination of grants for private college students.

According to John Harris, the founder of Harris Institute, these measures significantly impacted the institution's ability to continue operating.

Founded in 1989, the Harris Institute has a rich history of producing graduates who have gone on to win major music, film, and television awards, including the 2026 GRAMMY and JUNO ‘Producer of the Year’ awards. Many of its alumni hold leadership positions in the music industry, and some have even founded successful companies. The college has also collaborated with prestigious institutions such as the International Fund for Ireland, University of the West of Scotland, Moscow International Film School, and Edinburgh Napier University.

The Harris Institute has been recognized for its exceptional graduate employment results, low student loan default rates, and the highest percentage of award-winning faculty since its founding. The institution has delivered innovative programs that have contributed to the growth and development of the music industry in Canada.

To mark the end of an era, the Harris Institute has planned a special "Going Away Party" for Saturday, February 20, 2027. The event will celebrate the college's history, graduates, faculty, staff, and friends. Short quotes and memories from alumni, faculty, staff, and friends are encouraged and will be included in a "Book of Memories" to be published on the day of the event.
