HIGHLAND PARK, Ill., Oct. 06, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Following recent safety concerns related to compounded injectable glutathione, two organizations, QUAD A and MedSpa Board, have issued additional guidance on the safe administration of IV infusions in aesthetic and wellness practices. The guidance aims to ensure that IV infusion therapy, which is a medical service, is delivered under appropriate clinical oversight and with the necessary safeguards.
According to Kate Dee, MD, Founder and CEO of MedSpa Board, IV infusions should be treated as medical services. This means they must be prescribed by a physician, physician assistant (PA), or advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) acting within their scope of practice and applicable law. The therapy should be initiated and continuously monitored by appropriately licensed and credentialed staff.
The organizations emphasize that practices should not administer IV therapies when they cannot verify the product's source or quality, when ingredients are not appropriate for the intended route of administration, or when the practice does not have the clinical capabilities to manage foreseeable complications. Recent illnesses and serious adverse events involving injectable and compounded products have highlighted the importance of these precautions.
QUAD A and MedSpa Board agree that stronger safeguards are needed for IV infusion services in aesthetic and wellness practices. These safeguards include clear standards around product sourcing and quality, clinical oversight, patient selection and informed consent, ongoing monitoring, emergency preparedness, and the appropriateness of the therapy for the setting.
Both organizations are addressing these issues through their respective accreditation, certification, and standards processes. They will continue to collaborate to provide clearer guidance, strengthen patient protections, and promote safer delivery of IV therapy.
The guidance also stresses the importance of accurate and supportable marketing and promotional claims. Claims regarding the safety, effectiveness, performance, or health benefits of IV therapies should be supported by appropriate scientific evidence.
QUAD A has published an article outlining key questions to consider when evaluating product sourcing, quality, and suitability for IV use.
In summary, the guidance from QUAD A and MedSpa Board aims to ensure that IV infusion therapy in aesthetic and wellness practices is conducted safely and responsibly. The organizations are committed to promoting patient safety and providing clear standards for the industry.
