TORONTO, Oct. 06, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Economic uncertainty in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) kept homebuyers on the sidelines in September, according to the Toronto Regional Real Estate Board (TRREB). The board reported 5,040 home sales through its Multiple Listing Service (MLS®) System, a 9% decrease compared to September 2025. New listings entered into the MLS® System amounted to 16,500, marking a 14.4% drop year-over-year.
On a seasonally adjusted basis, both home sales and new listings were down month-over-month compared to August 2026.
The MLS® Home Price Index (MLS® HPI) Composite benchmark saw a 4.7% year-over-year decline in September 2026. The average selling price, at $1,006,409, was down by 5.1% compared to the same period last year. Both the MLS® HPI Composite and average selling price edged lower month-over-month compared to August 2026.
TRREB CEO John DiMichele emphasized the importance of reducing barriers to homeownership.
The data underscore the ongoing challenges faced by the real estate market in the GTA, with economic uncertainty and inflationary pressures dampening buyer interest. As the upcoming municipal election looms, stakeholders are closely watching for policy shifts that could impact the housing landscape.
