The global meat speciation testing market is poised to reach USD 2.28 billion by 2035, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.2%, driven by mislabelling findings and halal mandates. According to a report by Emergen Research, the market size was USD 1.04 billion in 2025, with a significant increase in demand due to the inability to visually distinguish minced and cooked meat from different animals. The UK Food Standards Agency’s 2025/26 survey revealed that 48 out of 125 meat products contained meat other than stated, highlighting the necessity for laboratory testing.

PCR-based testing, which copies a short stretch of animal DNA until a fluorescent signal shows the presence of a species, led the market with a 61.5% share in 2025. This method is particularly effective for processed meat, where visual cues are often removed. The official USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service method, MLG 20.02, is itself PCR-based, further emphasizing its importance in the industry. Validated methods such as ISO 20813 allow laboratories and processors to incorporate the same PCR protocol into supplier contracts, ensuring consistency and reliability.

Processed meat, which includes sausages, burgers, and cured meats, led the sample type segment with a 51.5% share in 2025. Processing removes the visual cues that identify a meat type, making laboratory testing essential to verify label claims. The meat-based ready meals segment is expected to register a rapid revenue growth rate in the global market over the forecast period.

The market in Europe accounted for the largest revenue share in 2025, driven by stringent regulations such as Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, which mandates that food information must not mislead regarding the nature and identity of a food. Eurofins Scientific reported a solid first-half momentum in its European Food & Feed business on 23 July 2026. The market in Asia Pacific is expected to register a 10.5% CAGR through 2035, the fastest growth among regions. India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reported that 27,567 out of 155,306 food samples were non-conforming on 10 February 2026. The United States-Iran escalation in late February 2026 disrupted Gulf food imports, delaying chilled meat shipments by 10 to 15 days.

The market in the Middle East & Africa is expected to register an 8.8% CAGR through 2035. Dubai Municipality reported a pork byproduct screening system handling 100 tests per hour on 4 February 2024. The United States-Iran escalation in late February 2026 further disrupted Gulf food imports, with tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz falling by over 90% by 28 April 2026.

Major companies in the market include Eurofins Scientific SE, SGS Société Générale de Surveillance SA, Intertek Group plc, Mérieux NutriSciences, Neogen Corporation, Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc., Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., and QIAGEN N.V. These companies are expected to play a significant role in driving the market growth through their advanced testing technologies and global presence.

Emergen Research's report highlights the importance of meat speciation testing in ensuring food safety, compliance with regulations, and maintaining consumer trust. As the global meat trade reached 43.4 million tonnes in 2025, the need for accurate and reliable testing methods has become more critical than ever.
