GeNeuro Secures Patent for ALS Treatment GNK-301

GeNeuro, Inc., a subsidiary of NRx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: NRXP), has secured a significant patent award in Europe for its novel drug candidate, GNK-301, which is aimed at treating Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The patent (EP 3 570 878 B1) covers a monoclonal antibody developed by GeNeuro and scientists at the US National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement. This patent, along with two previously issued US patents (10,723,787 and 10,981,977), underscores the company's commitment to advancing treatments for ALS and other HERV-mediated neurodegenerative diseases.
The discovery that lies at the heart of GNK-301's development is based on the reactivation of the Human Endogenous Retrovirus K (HERV K) Envelope protein (K Env). According to the patents, K Env is present in the spinal fluid of more than 75% of individuals with ALS and has been shown to produce the neurodegenerative findings characteristic of the disease in both experimental animals and human motor neuron cells. This breakthrough suggests a potential causal link between HERV K reactivation and the progression of ALS.
GeNeuro has already initiated Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) production of GNK-301 and is poised to commence Phase I human trials in the latter half of 2027. The company's plans include conducting these trials in both the United States and Europe, marking a significant step forward in the clinical development of this potential therapeutic.
In addition to the patent award, GeNeuro has been selected in the first round of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program for two potential awards in Therapeutic Development and Biomarker Development.
