Genesis Wins Sustainability Award for Microalgae-Based Agricultural Innovations

Australian microalgae company Genesis has been honored with the Agriculture & Environment category at The Australian Financial Review Sustainability Leaders 2026 Awards. The recognition highlights Genesis's pioneering approach in developing practical microalgae-based solutions that enhance agricultural productivity while significantly reducing environmental impact.

Genesis has been at the forefront of sustainable agricultural innovation, with its focus on Chlorella grown in the Great Barrier Reef Region. The company employs a low-energy cultivation process, keeping the algae wet to reduce costs and improve efficiency. This method has resulted in a livestock supplement that costs approximately 20 cents per animal per day, compared to around $2 for some dried alternatives. Trials with Queensland cattle producers have shown promising results, with faster growth and earlier achievement of production weight. This not only shortens the production cycle but also reduces the period over which cattle generate methane, thereby improving production efficiency and farm economics.

Genesis is expanding its research and development efforts to include microalgae applications for crop productivity, carbon capture and utilization, and agricultural methane reduction. The company is collaborating with research institutions and universities both within Australia and internationally to further develop these technologies. According to Genesis CEO Eric Chen, the award comes at a crucial time for the company, providing an opportunity to take its Australian technology into more products and markets while enhancing its research and development capabilities.

"If a solution is affordable, improves animal performance, and delivers a clear return, it has a much better chance of being adopted at the scale needed to make a real difference."
