The Gateway Family YMCA has announced a new initiative aimed at supporting the health and wellness of veterans and their families. Starting in the fall of 2026, the organization will offer a free 12-week wellness program at its locations in Elizabeth, Rahway, and Union, New Jersey.
The Veterans Wellness Initiative is designed to provide a comprehensive approach to health and wellness for military veterans and their spouses or partners. The program combines in-person exercise and wellness activities led by YMCA wellness professionals with opportunities for participants to connect, build relationships, and support one another through the shared bond of military service.
Susan Butler, Director of Community Wellness for The Gateway Family YMCA, emphasized the holistic nature of the initiative.
Participants in the program will have access to a variety of activities and wellness topics that support mind, body, and spirit. These include balance, nutrition, tai chi, mental health, resistance-band exercises, stretching, circuit training, and strength equipment. Small-group discussions and shared experiences will further enhance the connections and support among participants.
In addition to the weekly in-person programming, participants will receive 24-hour access to YMCA360, the Y’s virtual wellness platform. They will also be provided with an adult couple membership to The Gateway Family YMCA during the 12-week session. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive an additional six-month individual adult YMCA membership, helping them continue the healthy habits and connections developed during the program.
The initiative was created to address the unique wellness needs of veterans and military families by reducing barriers to health and wellness resources while fostering a sense of connection and belonging.
The Gateway Family YMCA, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has been serving eastern Union County and northern Middlesex County since 1900. Its mission is to strengthen the foundations of community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
