Garmin introduces SmartDrive autopilot system for sailboats and catamarans

OLATHE, Kan., Garmin, the world's leading marine electronics manufacturer, introduced a new autopilot system, SmartDrive, designed to enhance the performance and reliability of sailboats and catamarans. The innovative technology leverages a brushless linear actuator, built-in electronic control unit (ECU), and a rudder feedback sensor, offering superior durability and long-term reliability.

SmartDrive, available for sailboats and catamarans up to 45 feet and with a maximum displacement of 33,000 pounds, provides up to 1,050 pounds of thrust, ensuring steady rudder control and helping captains maintain course. "Sailors need dependable technology for both short and long voyages," said Susan Lyman, Garmin Vice President of Global Consumer Sales & Marketing. "SmartDrive was designed from the ground up to deliver precise steering, long-term durability, a quiet ride, and reliable performance in challenging offshore conditions."

The autopilot system offers streamlined installation and seamless compatibility with Garmin multifunction displays (MFDs) via the NMEA 2000 network. Sailors can purchase the SmartDrive actuator individually or as part of the Reactor 40 Sail Corepack, which includes a CCU with built-in 9-axis AHRS and a GHC 50 autopilot display. This bundle allows users to control the autopilot from a 5-inch touchscreen from various locations on board.
