Galien Foundation Announces Nominees for Patient First Award

The Galien Foundation has announced the nominees for the inaugural Prix Galien Patient First Award in Honor of Michael J. Fox. This new category aims to recognize excellence in clinical research, clinical trials, and patient-centered care improvement initiatives that prioritize patient voices and well-being. The award will be presented during the Galien Patient Summit on October 29, 2026, at the New York Academy of Medicine.

Michael J. Fox, the renowned actor, author, and advocate, launched the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000 after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. His efforts have not only raised awareness for the condition but also contributed to groundbreaking research and patient support. This year, the award is being given to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to improving patient-centered care, in line with Fox's legacy.

The Prix Galien Patient First Award Committee, comprising 12 distinguished leaders in patient advocacy and life sciences, evaluated submissions based on criteria such as initiatives led by patient organizations, direct embedding of patient voices into clinical trial design, and the integration of lived experience into research priorities. The committee also considered transparency, equity, and trust in patient partnerships, as well as the translation of research into meaningful improvements in patient outcomes and quality of life.

Among the nominees are several private-sector initiatives and patient-led initiatives. The committee sought to identify projects that best embody the principle "No decision for me without me," ensuring that patient perspectives are central to the development and implementation of research and clinical practices.

The judges include notable figures such as Dr. Amy P. Abernathy, co-founder of Highlander Health and Principal Deputy Commissioner of the FDA; Ronald Bartek, co-founder and president of the Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance; and Dr. Julie Gerberding, former Commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration and current president and CEO of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Medicine.
