GA-ASI and Hanwha Aerospace Demonstrate Mojave STOL Aircraft Capabilities

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) and Hanwha Aerospace have achieved a significant milestone in unmanned aircraft system (UAS) technology by completing the first-ever flight operations from a simulated battlefield using the Mojave Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) aircraft. This demonstration validated the Mojave STOL's ability to operate in austere environments, showcasing its potential for future military applications.
The flight took place at the Defense Drone Technology Exhibition in the countryside north of Seoul. The Mojave STOL, configured with dual weapon rails and inert payloads, executed a concept of operations designed to illustrate how STOL capability enhances operational flexibility, survivability, and responsiveness for future Republic of Korea (ROK) defense applications. The aircraft took off from a conventional runway at the ROK Army 513th Aviation Battalion, flew to the Seungjin Training Field, and then landed on a rough maneuver trail used by ROK Army tanks and artillery vehicles. After a brief ground operation, the aircraft took off again, resumed operations, and returned to the ROK Army 513th Aviation Battalion.
The Mojave STOL demonstrator is part of a broader partnership between GA-ASI and Hanwha Aerospace, announced in 2025. The partners are co-developing and co-producing UAS with STOL capability for a worldwide customer base, including the ROK Ministry of National Defense, the United States Department of War, and other global customers. Critical Design Review (CDR) for a production Mojave STOL is expected in November this year, with the first flight scheduled for 2027.
The Mojave STOL's ability to operate from an austere environment with a short runway is a significant advancement in UAS technology. Unlike other aircraft with similar endurance, range, or payload, the Mojave STOL can take off and land on rough terrain, making it highly versatile for various military operations. This capability enhances operational flexibility, survivability, and responsiveness, making it a valuable asset for future defense applications.
The Defense Drone Technology Exhibition, which took place in the countryside north of Seoul, highlighted the Mojave STOL's unique features and capabilities. The event included an array of ROK suppliers, with many contributing to the production of the Mojave STOL. The demonstrator is now scheduled to travel to Changwon, where it will be on display at Hanwha's Industry Day on September 21.
The partnership between GA-ASI and Hanwha Aerospace aims to deliver advanced UAS technology that can meet the evolving needs of the global defense industry. The Mojave STOL's successful battlefield operations demonstrate the potential for unmanned systems to play a critical role in modern military operations, particularly in contested and austere environments.
