AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS, September 14, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- G2A.COM, the world's largest marketplace for digital entertainment, has released findings from a survey of over 2,000 of its users. The survey, which focused on preferences for purchasing major AAA releases such as Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI), revealed that consumers value choice in their entertainment purchases, with preferences for digital downloads and physical discs being almost evenly split.
According to the survey, 38% of respondents preferred digital downloads, while 37% opted for physical discs. The remaining 25% either had no preference or did not plan to buy the game. These findings suggest that the debate between digital and physical formats is not a zero-sum game but rather an indication of broader consumer expectations for flexibility and control in their entertainment choices.
The survey also highlighted that digital consumers still value optionality. When asked about their purchasing behavior, 47% of respondents stated they would be less likely to buy a full-priced AAA title at launch if only one purchasing format was available to them. This underscores the importance of providing consumers with multiple options to meet their individual needs.
Ownership and flexibility were found to significantly influence purchasing decisions. Sixty-nine percent of respondents said the ability to resell, trade, or lend games could impact their decision when purchasing full-priced titles. Additionally, 59% of respondents noted that additional elements associated with physical editions, such as steelbooks or art books, could sway their purchasing decisions.
Looking ahead, the survey suggests that the market is evolving. Thirty-four percent of respondents expect physical games to become primarily a niche collector proposition within five years, while 23% believe physical discs will be nearly phased out for new releases. However, 77% of respondents expressed some level of concern about long-term game preservation in an increasingly digital market, with 58% describing themselves as very concerned.
Katarzyna Jakubiec, Chief Business Officer at G2A.COM, emphasized that the findings reflect a broader transformation in the digital entertainment landscape.
Jakubiec further explained that the marketplace model at G2A.COM is designed to cater to this growing expectation.
The findings from the survey are particularly relevant given the strong interest in GTA VI across G2A.COM's marketplace. Marketplace data showed that traffic to GTA VI-related pages rose 65-fold during a major surge in interest in June, with July alone accounting for 48% of all GTA VI-related traffic recorded between January and July. GTA VI also became the most wishlisted game in 45 countries, highlighting the global anticipation surrounding the release.
G2A.COM's research underscores the evolving nature of the digital entertainment market. As distribution becomes increasingly digital, consumers are gaining access to more content from more sources and across more platforms than ever before. With this abundance comes a growing expectation of control over how, where, and at what price they access entertainment.
The survey findings suggest that the future of the market is not about limiting choice but about multiplying it. G2A.COM remains committed to providing a wide range of options to its users, ensuring that they can make informed decisions that best suit their individual preferences.
