The Future Robotics Exploration Hub, Germany's first vendor- and technology-independent physical-robotics and artificial-intelligence (Physical-AI) center, was officially announced at the Future Robotics Summit in Stuttgart. This initiative aims to explore the next generation of robotics and Physical-AI technologies, providing a platform for companies to validate and compare different robotic platforms and AI models based on real industrial applications.
The hub, located in Stuttgart, will officially open its doors in January 2027. It is a collaborative effort between the INC Innovation Center and industrial companies such as Liebherr, SICK, and NETZSCH. The primary goal is to address the challenges posed by traditional automation, particularly in scenarios with high product variability, changing environments, and complex handling tasks. By leveraging advanced robotics and Physical-AI, the hub seeks to support employees in physically demanding or repetitive tasks, making production processes more flexible and efficient.
Unlike traditional showrooms or labs centered around individual robotic systems, the Future Robotics Exploration Hub takes a vendor- and technology-independent approach. Companies can bring both jointly defined cross-industry use cases and their own industrial challenges into the hub. Different combinations of robotic platforms, AI models, sensors, grippers, software, and other components can be explored and evaluated. Initial applications will range from material transport and preparation to loading and unloading as well as assembly tasks. Companies will also be able to bring their own products and components into the test environment, allowing them to explore how their products interact with future humanoid robotic systems and how they could be further developed for new robotic applications.
Building internal capabilities within participating companies is a central part of the hub concept. Through planned Future Robotics training programs, employees will gain hands-on experience with simulation, motion capture, and AI learning methods such as imitation learning and reinforcement learning. They will also learn how Physical-AI models can be used for robotic applications. The hub is not designed as a promise that every process can or should be automated. It is an exploration and learning environment where companies can systematically identify where the next generation of robotics can already create value today. They can also understand current technological limitations and determine what needs to be in place before these technologies can be deployed in industrial environments.
Several industrial companies are already actively involved in shaping the Future Robotics Exploration Hub. They contribute industrial experience, requirements, and concrete use cases.
The Future Robotics Exploration Hub is privately funded and developed by the INC Innovation Center together with participating companies. Industrial partners contribute real-world challenges, use cases, and user perspectives. Technology partners provide relevant robotic platforms, hardware, software, and AI technologies. As the initiator and operator, the INC Innovation Center is responsible for building the infrastructure, integrating the different technologies, and providing technical support for cross-industry use case development and validation. This creates a shared infrastructure where companies can explore and validate technologies without having to build a complete testing environment of their own.
The hub aims to strengthen competitiveness and create new market opportunities. Beyond specific automation applications, it will help companies understand the broader economic impact of the next generation of robotics. Physical-AI is not only changing how products are manufactured but could also create new requirements for products and components themselves. From sensors, drive technology, and gripping systems to interfaces, software, infrastructure, and new services, new value chains and market opportunities are emerging. For European industry, the opportunity goes beyond making existing processes more efficient. Companies also need to start building the capabilities, technologies, and business models required for an emerging global robotics market.
The Future Robotics Exploration Hub is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of robotics and Physical-AI in Germany and Europe. By providing a platform for exploration, comparison, and validation, it aims to bridge the gap between technological development and industrial reality, helping companies make informed decisions and prepare for the future of automation.
