Europe’s push to identify and nurture potential global champions took a significant step forward with the unveiling of the Future 100 Slovenia at the Future 500 Forum in Bled, Slovenia. The initiative, which aims to support high-growth companies and bridge Europe’s competitiveness gap, has identified 100 Slovenian firms that have collectively doubled their combined revenues to €2.1 billion.

The Future 500 Forum, titled “Powering Europe’s Scale-Up Engine: From Selection to Acceleration,” brought together key figures from across the European business and political landscapes, including the Prime Minister of Croatia, Andrej Plenković, and Dr. Anže Logar, Slovenia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Labor, and Sport. The event highlighted the growing recognition that Europe needs a robust strategy to support its burgeoning businesses.

“Europe is beginning to mobilize the capital needed for growth, but simply having €80 billion in investment will not suffice,” stated Stjepan Orešković, founder of the Future 500 Initiative. “We need to identify our future champions early and ensure they have the capital, markets, and expertise to compete globally.”

The Future 100 Slovenia represents the first full application of the Future 500 methodology, a data-driven selection process designed to pinpoint the most promising companies in the region. This pilot project is seen as a crucial step toward establishing a blueprint for identifying and supporting Europe’s future champions across the continent.

The initiative’s methodology was developed by an international research team at IEDC – Bled School of Management, collaborating with researchers from prestigious institutions such as Harvard, Oxford, the University of Edinburgh, and ESMT Berlin. The Future 500 Forum provided a platform for discussions on how to select, connect, and support these promising companies, with the ultimate goal of accelerating their global growth.

Participants at the forum included high-ranking officials from the European Commission, representatives from major financial institutions, and key stakeholders from the private sector. The event underscored the commitment of European leaders to fostering a competitive business environment that can rival that of the United States and China.

“The Future 100 Slovenia is not just about identifying companies; it’s about nurturing them,” said Orešković. “We want to work closely with each company to develop a robust growth strategy and connect them with the right partners and institutions.”

While the Future 500 Initiative emphasizes the importance of identifying and supporting potential champions, it also acknowledges that raising capital alone is insufficient. The initiative argues that Europe must improve its methods for identifying promising companies and providing them with the necessary backing to succeed on a global scale.
