Freddie Mac Reports Rising Mortgage Rates

MCLEAN, Va., Sept. 17, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Freddie Mac reported that the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) averaged 6.95% as of September 17, 2026, up from 6.76% the previous week. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 6.26%.
The 15-year FRM also saw an increase, averaging 6.26% as of September 17, 2026, up from 6.09% the previous week. A year ago, the 15-year FRM averaged 5.41%.
According to Sam Khater, Freddie Mac's Chief Economist, the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage continues to fluctuate as markets assess economic data.
The PMMS® survey, which focuses on conventional, conforming, fully amortizing home purchase loans for borrowers who put 20% down and have excellent credit, provides a snapshot of the current mortgage landscape.
