MCLEAN, Va., Sept. 10, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Freddie Mac reported that the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) has hit a new threshold, averaging 6.76% this week. This increase from last week's 6.71% marks a slight rise, but it still stands at a year-over-year increase from 6.35% recorded at the same time last year.
According to Sam Khater, Freddie Mac's Chief Economist, the rise in mortgage rates could pose challenges for homebuyers. "Aspiring buyers should remember that shopping around for the best mortgage rate and getting multiple quotes can potentially save them thousands," he advised.
In comparison, the 15-year FRM also saw a slight uptick, averaging 6.09% this week, up from 6.04% last week. A year ago, the 15-year FRM was at 5.50%. These changes reflect ongoing shifts in the housing market, which Freddie Mac continues to monitor closely.
The PMMS® survey, which focuses on conventional, conforming, fully amortizing home purchase loans for borrowers who put 20% down and have excellent credit, provides insights into the mortgage landscape. Freddie Mac's mission is to make home ownership possible for families across the nation, promoting liquidity, stability, and affordability in the housing market.
The survey highlights that while the overall trend in mortgage rates is upward, the increases remain relatively modest. However, the higher rates could have significant implications for homebuyers, especially those looking to purchase homes in the near future. The slight adjustments in rates can affect the total cost of a mortgage over the life of the loan, potentially making homeownership more expensive.
For consumers considering a mortgage or those who are already in the process of buying a home, the rise in rates could impact their budgeting and decision-making. Freddie Mac's advice to shoppers underscores the importance of comparing offers and understanding the long-term financial implications of different mortgage rates.
As the housing market continues to evolve, Freddie Mac remains committed to providing regular updates and insights to help homebuyers navigate the complexities of the mortgage landscape.
