Knowles, who fell and dislocated her knee at her residence on December 14, 2022, was rushed to Cape Coral Hospital. A computed tomography angiography (CTA) revealed that she had a blockage in her popliteal artery, which is the artery behind the knee that supplies blood to her leg and foot. The popliteal artery blockage was a significant concern, as it can lead to severe complications if left untreated for too long.

During the trial, Knowles was able to demonstrate that a popliteal artery injury resulting from a knee dislocation is considered an emergency to the limb. Her vascular surgery expert testified that if the blockage was not addressed in a timely manner, the muscles and nerves in her leg would die. Evidence presented at trial showed that the blockage in Knowles' artery was not addressed for a significant amount of time after her fall. Specifically, there was no one to evaluate her vascular status that night, and blood flow to her leg was significantly diminished when tests were run the next day.

The plaintiff argued that her fall was the cause of the injury, but if the medical team had acted sooner to restore blood flow to her leg, she would not have had to undergo the amputation. Her expert stated that it was more likely than not that, if blood flow had been restored to her leg in a timely fashion, she would have been able to keep her leg. However, on January 11, 2023, she had her leg amputated above the knee.
