CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Sept. 23, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Flagship Pioneering, a scientific innovation engine for transformative platforms and products, has secured a groundbreaking contract from the Department of War (DoW) under the ONTARGET program. This agreement, valued at up to $47 million over a five-year period, marks a significant shift in how the DoW partners with the private sector to address evolving biological threats.
The ONTARGET program, managed by the Joint Science and Technology Office (JSTO) within the DoW's Chemical and Biological Defense Program, aims to stay ahead of emerging threats through a unique and powerful partnership with the private sector. The strategic collaboration will leverage Flagship's extensive ecosystem of more than 40 pioneering companies and technological capabilities, including Apriori Bio and Prologue Medicines, to accelerate the development of medical countermeasures.
Flagship Pioneering, founded in 2000, has been instrumental in originating and fostering over 100 scientific ventures, operating with $14 billion in assets as of its latest capital raise, announced in July 2024. The current Flagship ecosystem comprises a diverse array of companies, including Generate Biomedicines, Inari, Lila Sciences, Moderna, Sana Biotechnology, Tessera Therapeutics, and Valo Health. These companies bring a broad range of innovative platforms to the table, covering areas such as broad-spectrum countermeasures, precision delivery technologies, toxin-neutralizing platforms, and novel approaches to immune enhancement and viral pathway disruption.
Through the ONTARGET program, Flagship Pioneering will work closely with the DoW to evaluate a wide array of cutting-edge platform technologies. The initial projects include Apriori Bio's Octavia™ platform, designed to rapidly generate stable, cross-protective candidates by anticipating viral evolution, and Prologue Medicines' DELVE platform, which applies advanced AI approaches to identify evolutionarily optimized functions that can modulate and enhance human immune responses.
The award will provide proof-of-concept funding for a select set of projects, each leveraging distinct Flagship technologies. The DoW will have the opportunity to advance additional projects throughout the five-year agreement, ensuring a continuous stream of innovative solutions to address evolving and engineered threats.
