FirstEnergy Foundation invests $1.3 million in New Jersey food banks
Holmdel, N.J. — The FirstEnergy Foundation has announced its largest investment in hunger relief to date, awarding $1.3 million to 25 New Jersey food banks and pantries as part of a $5 million regional initiative. This funding supports nearly 150 organizations across six states and the District of Columbia, aiming to address growing food insecurity in local communities.
The grants are expected to provide more than 3.8 million meals for families and neighbors across New Jersey, helping to meet the increasing demand in communities served by Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L). This significant investment underscores the foundation's commitment to combating hunger in the state, which has been designated the "Garden State" due to its fertile agricultural land.
Doug Mokoid, FirstEnergy's President of New Jersey, stated, "No one should have to wonder where their next meal is coming from, especially in a state nicknamed the Garden State. People across New Jersey are feeling real pressure right now. Costs are going up, and food is one more thing stretching household budgets. Food banks and pantries are working every day to meet growing needs, but they can't do it alone. This investment will help provide more than 3.8 million meals for New Jersey families, seniors, and children while strengthening the organizations on the front lines of hunger relief. We're proud to support their work and to stand beside them through volunteer service in the communities we call home."

The funding builds on last year's initiative, expanding support to 25 hunger-relief organizations in New Jersey, including three first-time recipients. The grants, ranging from $5,000 to $250,000, will benefit organizations such as the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Feeding Middlesex County, and the Jersey Shore Dream Center. These funds will help these organizations stock local shelves and ensure that households facing food insecurity have access to nutritious meals.
FirstEnergy Foundation's support extends beyond financial aid, as employees volunteer their time to work at food banks, pantries, and other nonprofit organizations. Through the company's Volunteer Time Off (VTO) program, employees contribute approximately 28,500 volunteer hours annually, providing hands-on support that helps organizations serve more families while reducing operating costs. In 2025, these efforts were valued at more than $1 million.
The FirstEnergy Foundation's giving priorities include housing stability, hunger relief, workforce development, and STEM initiatives, all of which reflect community needs and the company's strategic focus. Combined with the Hunger Action Month grants, the Foundation has distributed nearly $6.5 million in community support across FirstEnergy's operational area to date in 2026.
This substantial investment in hunger relief not only addresses immediate needs but also strengthens the capacity of organizations working tirelessly to combat food insecurity in New Jersey. The funding will help ensure that communities across the state can continue to access the essential resources they need to thrive.
