FibroBiologics Receives Patent for Fibroblast-Based Wound Healing Therapy

FibroBiologics, a Houston-based clinical-stage biotechnology company, has expanded its intellectual property portfolio with the issuance of a new U.S. patent for the therapeutic use of fibroblasts in wound healing. The patent, titled "Therapeutic Use of Fibroblasts for Use in Wound Healing," was granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on September 1, 2026, and covers the topical administration of 3D spheroid fibroblasts and fibroblast-derived materials to accelerate wound healing.
This latest patent, U.S. Patent No. 12,721,866, builds upon FibroBiologics' existing 270+ patents and pending applications. It specifically addresses the treatment and acceleration of wound healing processes, targeting nonhealing and difficult-to-heal wounds, such as chronic wounds and diabetic ulcers. The company's focus on fibroblast-based therapies underscores its commitment to addressing one of the largest unmet needs in medicine: wound care.
In preclinical studies, the use of fibroblast spheroids and fibroblast-derived materials demonstrated significant acceleration in wound healing. These spheroids act as living reservoirs that implant on the wound surface, migrate, and proliferate, delivering regenerative signals directly where they are needed. According to Pete O'Heeron, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of FibroBiologics, "Our preclinical data showed that wounds treated with fibroblast spheroids healed significantly faster than controls, even in diabetic models where healing is notoriously difficult. This technology has the potential to change the standard of care for millions of patients suffering from chronic and nonhealing wounds."

The new patent encompasses various applications, including the treatment of chronic wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), venous leg ulcers (VLUs), pressure wounds, bedsores, and burn wounds, as well as cuts and abrasions. It also includes methods of accelerating wound healing using a topically administered fibroblast spheroid composition, which comprises 3D spheroid fibroblasts or a fibroblast-derived material, including one or more of extracellular vesicles, exosomes, microvesicles, apoptotic bodies, and/or fragments of fibroblast cells.
