Fiber Internet Driving Economic Growth in Houston

Fiber internet has become an indispensable cornerstone of economic growth in Houston, according to a new report from Ezee Fiber. The study, titled "Fueling Houston's Growth with Fiber," reveals that fiber broadband is driving faster internet speeds, increasing home values, creating jobs, and supporting critical infrastructure across various sectors.

The report highlights that fiber availability has contributed to an estimated $1.6 billion in home value to single-family homes across Houston since 2020. Suzy Winger, SVP and General Manager of Ezee Fiber's Texas Region, stated, "Fiber has become core infrastructure in Houston, not just an amenity. For the city to continue to grow, the need for reliable, high-capacity connectivity is essential."

Between December 2022 and December 2025, median download speeds in Harris County increased from approximately 80 megabytes per second (Mbps) to more than 280 Mbps, nearly tripling the speed. This significant boost in connectivity is expected to generate several hundred new jobs by 2029, in addition to the 2,000 jobs already created.

Fiber internet plays a crucial role in supporting Houston's key economic sectors. It powers critical assets such as NASA's Johnson Space Center, as well as companies like Axiom Space and Intuitive Machines. Ezee Fiber's infrastructure has also supported Eli Lilly's $6.5 billion manufacturing investment, while the energy sector relies on fiber for supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and smart grid operations across the region's 4,200 energy firms.

Ezee Fiber's report also shows that communities with fiber internet access see measurable benefits in education and economic growth. Students in fiber-served areas consistently perform better on standardized tests, with math and reading scores increasing by 2.3% and 1.1%, respectively. Furthermore, communities with median download speeds of 250 Mbps are more likely to generate new small businesses than those with speeds of only 100 Mbps.

Harris County's progress in expanding access to fiber broadband is noteworthy. In 2022, only 75% of the county had access to a fiber broadband provider. By late 2025, that number surged to 94%, reflecting substantial investment in network infrastructure. Ezee Fiber's efforts in expanding fiber coverage are part of a broader trend of companies investing in high-capacity connectivity to support the region's economic growth and innovation ecosystem.

The report underscores the importance of fiber internet as foundational infrastructure for Houston's continued economic prosperity. Ezee Fiber's findings suggest that fiber's role goes beyond being an amenity; it is a critical component of the city's economic and social fabric.
