Fairfax County Public Schools Set to Host First K-12 Quantum Computer

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is set to make history by becoming the first K-12 public school system in the world to host an operational quantum computer. The initiative, a partnership between FCPS, Connected DMV, and the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA), will bring a quantum computer directly to Skyview High School, providing students with a unique opportunity to engage with this emerging technology.

The quantum computer, about the size of a small refrigerator, is designed for educational purposes and will be installed in December 2026. Student learning experiences with the technology are expected to begin in spring 2027. The program will initially focus on a quantum computing pathway, potentially expanding into a credit-bearing course with dual-enrollment opportunities and industry-recognized credentials.

FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle C. Reid emphasized the importance of preparing students for future careers that do not yet exist.

The quantum computer will enable students to explore fundamental quantum concepts, test problems such as finding the most efficient way to organize a schedule, and compare how a quantum computer approaches a problem with how a traditional computer would solve it. Students will develop skills in coding, mathematics, experimentation, data analysis, problem solving, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Skyview High School is also expected to become a regional hub for quantum learning. Through Connected DMV's Potomac Quantum Innovation Center, FCPS and its partners are working to build connections with universities, researchers, federal laboratories, and other school systems across Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority will help connect this work with Fairfax County's business and technology community, creating opportunities for students to learn from industry leaders and gain exposure to the emerging careers and real-world applications of quantum technology.

The initiative reflects FCPS' commitment to 22nd-century learning and to providing each and every student with meaningful opportunities to explore. As the first K-12 public school system to host a quantum computer, FCPS is setting a new standard for educational innovation and preparing students for the technological challenges of the future.
