BRUSSELS, Sept. 30, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Europe's electricity system demonstrated resilience in the face of global energy market disruptions in 2026, according to Eurelectric's Power Barometer 2026. Amid geopolitical tensions and extreme weather, the report highlights how clean power generation helped shield consumers and industry from the volatility of fossil fuels. However, the study also underscores the need for enhanced storage and flexibility solutions to strengthen Europe's energy security and competitiveness.

Between February and August 2026, EU electricity prices increased by 22.8%, while gas prices surged by 88.4%. This stark contrast in price movements was particularly evident during the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, where gas prices rose by 41% between February and May. Despite this, EU electricity prices actually fell by 7% during the same period, demonstrating the effectiveness of clean power generation in mitigating the impact of fossil fuel price shocks.

A record-hot summer further pushed power prices higher as gas reached new highs, Nordic hydropower weakened, and nuclear availability fell due to high river temperatures, low water levels, and planned maintenance. However, over the full period, electricity prices remained significantly more resistant to the fossil fuel shock, highlighting the benefits of a cleaner energy mix.

The report reveals that 72% of EU electricity generation was clean in 2026, limiting the impact of fossil fuels on power prices. Bulgaria serves as a prime example of the benefits of storage, where the development of 5.4 GW of battery capacity reduced its wholesale power prices from 21% above the EU average in 2024 to just 8.3% above in 2026. Despite this progress, Europe is lagging behind in storage capacity. Utility-scale storage stood at 64 GW in 2025, and even with 78 GW of planned additions, it remains far below the EU's 200 GW target for 2030.

To strengthen Europe's energy security and competitiveness, Eurelectric calls for accelerated permitting of grids, storage, and clean power, stronger incentives for flexibility, and a stable investment framework that preserves efficient market signals supporting electrification. The report provides key data trends on electrification, demand, emissions, and more, offering valuable insights into the current state of Europe's energy landscape.
