Españix Deploys Nokia Deepfield Defender Against DDoS Attacks

Españix, Spain's largest internet exchange point, has deployed Nokia's Deepfield Defender to protect its Barcelona- and Madrid-based exchange platform from distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. This move comes as part of a new optional DDoS protection service offered to the more than 200 national and international networks connected to the Espanix Node, which serves the majority of internet end users in Spain.

The deployment of Deepfield Defender is aimed at stopping DDoS attacks at the exchange level, thereby preventing them from reaching the networks and their end users. Javier Achirica, CTO of Espanix, stated, "DDoS attacks remain a primary threat to our connected networks daily. Integrating a proactive detection and mitigation solution into our infrastructure represents a significant step forward in Espanix's ongoing commitment to maximizing security across our service portfolio."

Deepfield Defender uses AI-driven, big data analytics of network telemetry and a proprietary, cloud-based data feed to detect and mitigate DDoS attacks in seconds. The solution surgically removes unwanted traffic while legitimate packets continue to flow, ensuring that local traffic remains local and data sovereignty is maintained.

The deployment of Deepfield Defender is part of a broader partnership between Espanix and Nokia, which began in 2025 when Espanix became the first internet exchange point (IXP) in Spain to offer 400G connectivity to its customers. This new service is expected to enhance the security and resilience of the Spanish internet, supporting data sovereignty and European regulatory expectations.

Españix's CTO emphasized the strategic importance of the Espanix Node as the central crossroads of the Spanish internet.

The new DDoS protection service is being introduced to the Espanix community and the wider industry at upcoming events. The deployment of Deepfield Defender is expected to set a new standard for internet security in Spain, as Espanix joins a growing group of leading European internet exchanges that use Nokia Deepfield to protect their members and build new security services on top of their interconnection platforms.
