STOCKHOLM, Oct. 21, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Ellevio AB (publ), one of Sweden's leading energy companies, has secured a significant loan to modernize and expand the Beckomberga substation in Stockholm, a move that underscores the firm's commitment to strengthening the regional electricity grid. The SEK 1 billion loan from the Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) will enable Ellevio to undertake a series of critical upgrades, including the installation of new and extended gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and a new 1,000 MVA transmission grid connection node. This new connection will be linked to the nearby substation of the national transmission grid operator, Svenska kraftnät, significantly enhancing the reliability and security of the regional electricity system.
The Beckomberga substation, currently serving around 120,000 customers, has reached the end of its technical lifespan. Its modernization and expansion are essential to meet the growing electricity demands of the Stockholm region. The project will also include the installation of new transformers, thereby increasing the available power capacity and improving the overall reliability of the regional electricity system.
The modernization of the Beckomberga substation is part of a broader initiative by Ellevio to upgrade and expand its electricity network. This includes the refurbishment and replacement of approximately 5,000 kilometres of power lines, primarily with underground cables. The company employs more than 800 professionals and, together with its partners, provides jobs for over 4,000 people. Ellevio AB (publ) is owned by pension fund managers OMERS Infrastructure, the Third Swedish National Pension Fund (AP3), Folksam, and AMF.
The Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) is an international financial institution owned by Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden. It aims to strengthen the competitiveness, sustainability, and resilience of the Nordic-Baltic region. NIB's financing for this project will contribute to the reliability and security of electricity supply in western Stockholm, aligning with its mission to support sustainable growth in the region.
This investment is a testament to Ellevio's dedication to maintaining a robust and reliable electricity network, essential for the continued development and sustainability of the Stockholm region. The project is expected to significantly enhance the grid's ability to meet the increasing demands of the area, supporting both electrification efforts and sustainable growth initiatives.
