Eli Lilly Breaks Ground on $6.5 Billion Houston Manufacturing Site

HOUSTON, Sept. 21, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Eli Lilly and Company has broken ground on a new manufacturing facility in Houston, Texas, marking the fifth U.S. site to produce domestic active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) since 2020. The $6.5 billion investment is part of the company's $50 billion push to reshore medicine production, aiming to meet growing domestic demand and export American-made medicines to people around the world.
The new site will focus on manufacturing Foundayo (orforglipron), a GLP-1 receptor agonist approved for weight management in adults with obesity or overweight and a weight-related condition. Foundayo is a small molecule, making it more scalable and easier to produce compared to peptide-based medicines. Lilly is also studying the drug for potential use in type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, and other conditions.
The Houston facility will employ more than 600 people in high-wage jobs, including engineers, scientists, operations personnel, and lab technicians. Additionally, 4,000 construction jobs will be created during the site's construction and commissioning. Lilly is providing $12.5 million to support a relationship with San Jacinto College, aiming to develop a skilled workforce for advanced chemical synthesis manufacturing. This partnership will focus on training pathways and expanding the equipment and facility capacity needed to produce technicians, operators, maintenance professionals, and other manufacturing talent.
Lilly is also contributing a $2.5 million charitable donation to the San Jacinto College Foundation to support scholarships for eligible students. The company expects the new facility to be operational in the coming years, with a full global rollout of Foundayo targeted for 2027. Foundayo is currently under regulatory review in more than 40 countries, with data expected later this year for additional uses.
The new facility will use state-of-the-art technologies, including machine learning, AI, digitally integrated systems, and advanced data analytics to drive right-first-time execution. Digital automation will be embedded throughout the site to streamline operations and ensure a reliable supply of safe, high-quality medicines.
Lilly has announced ten U.S. sites since 2020, with the Houston site focusing on advanced therapeutics, including oligonucleotides, a class of medicines that can work at the genetic level to switch off the production of specific proteins to treat disease closer to its source.
