East Los Angeles Marks 80th Mexican Independence Day Parade

Returning in its 80th edition, the East Los Angeles Mexican Independence Day Parade and Festival is set to celebrate its rich history and vibrant community on Sunday, September 13, 2026. The event, which has been a cornerstone of the Mexican-American community in Los Angeles for decades, will feature a grand marshal and co-grand marshal who are both local figures of significance.
El Dasa, a Latin Grammy-nominated Regional Mexican singer-songwriter and actor, will serve as the grand marshal. His journey to success began in Mexico, where he participated in a singing contest and made it to the second round. After migrating to the United States, El Dasa found his voice in Los Angeles, where he initially worked as a driver for legendary singer Vicente Fernández. Impressed by his talent, Fernández invited El Dasa to perform a duet at the Gibson Amphitheatre. Since then, El Dasa has released several successful albums and has been recognized with an International Emmy Award and nominations for the Latin Grammy Awards and Premio Lo Nuestro.
Hilda L. Solis, the Los Angeles County Board Chair and First District Supervisor, will co-lead the parade. Solis, who has served as the U.S. Secretary of Labor from 2009 to 2013, represents the First Supervisorial District of Los Angeles County, home to nearly two million residents. Her district includes East Los Angeles, where the parade takes place. Solis has been a long-standing supporter of the event, having funded it for the past few years. This year marks her final year on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
The parade will take place along East Cesar E. Chavez Avenue, starting at Mednik Avenue and continuing to Gage Avenue. It will be broadcast live on ABC7, one of the nation's major television networks, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The celebration will feature a variety of entertainment, including music and performances, as well as a fair with food vendors and family-friendly activities on Mednik Avenue between East Cesar E. Chavez Avenue and First Street.
This year, the parade will also have its godparents, actor Gabriel Soto and Univision Despierta America anchor Nitzia Chama. The Mexican Civic Patriotic Committee, Inc., which has been organizing the event for 80 years, will celebrate its 95th anniversary this year. Since its founding in 1931, the committee has been a vital part of the Mexican-American community in Los Angeles, hosting the parade as a symbol of unity and joy.
The event is presented and produced by the Mexican Civic Patriotic Committee, Inc., with support from the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles and Los Angeles County.
