DUNWOODY, Ga., Oct. 29, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- E. 48th Street Market, a cornerstone of the Dunwoody community for four decades, celebrated its 40th anniversary this year, marking a significant milestone in the local business landscape. Founded in 1986 by Charlie and Anita Augello, the market has grown from a small shop offering take-away Hero sandwiches and family-recipe Italian meals to a full-scale culinary landmark.
The Augellos' journey began with a train ride through Europe, where they decided to leave behind the corporate world and bring the authentic flavors of their New York City upbringing to the South. The market, named after the Manhattan street where Charlie worked as a young boy, was born out of a desire to recreate the "basic essentials" of a New York Italian life, crusty bread, fresh pasta, and a familiar butcher who knew your name.
Over the years, E. 48th Street Market has expanded significantly. The Artisan Bakery, famous for its daily-baked crusty Italian bread, stands as a testament to the market's commitment to quality. The Premier Wine Selection, featuring 140 notable Italian labels, and the inviting wine bar have added a sophisticated touch to the market's offerings. The Patio, a fully enclosed, climate-controlled dining area with retractable windows, has transformed from simple grocery shelves into a place where people can sit to enjoy lunch or dinner or meet friends for coffee and a cannoli or a slice of pizza.
The market's success is rooted in family. While their son Chuck and daughters Erica and Claudia have all contributed to the legacy, eldest daughter Andrea now leads the daily operations. The market is a true multi-generational "family affair," with grandchildren often seen helping.
E. 48th Street Market's impact on the community extends beyond its products. The Augellos remain deeply entrenched in the local fabric, supporting the Rotary Club of Dunwoody, the USO, the Dunwoody Police Department, and many of the local schools. The market's dedication to the community has not gone unnoticed. On September 30, 2021, the Mayor of Dunwoody issued a proclamation designating it "E. 48th Street Market Day," recognizing the market as the longest-operating business with its original owners in Dunwoody's history.
"Our customers have become our friends," Anita Augello said.
As the market looks toward the future, it invites old friends and new neighbors alike to stop by, grab a sandwich, and share a glass of wine. Salute to 40 years of family, flavor, and tradition.
