Duke Energy Florida to Lower Electricity Rates in 2027

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Sept. 3, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Duke Energy Florida customers can look forward to lower electricity rates beginning in January 2027, as the company has requested a rate decrease following a filing with the Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC).

Residential customers who typically use 1,000 kilowatt-hours per month will see their bills drop by $0.71 from December 2026 to January 2027. Meanwhile, commercial and industrial customers are expected to experience a reduction of 0.8% to 3.6% on their bills, though the exact impact may vary based on several factors.

Melissa Seixas, Duke Energy Florida’s state president, commented, "What matters to our customers matters to us. We are pleased to see rate decreases in 2027, but we will continue to focus on making smart, disciplined investments to keep our costs down and maintain reliable service."

Customer rates are determined by several components that are reviewed annually. These include the cost of fuel used to generate power, ongoing expansion of cost-effective renewable energy, and improvements to infrastructure that help reduce outages and speed up storm recovery.

According to Seixas, some costs, such as fuel, are decreasing. However, investments to strengthen the grid are increasing slightly. Notably, a 2% increase in the base rate, set by the FPSC in 2024, is being avoided due to an innovative tax strategy that will accelerate the delivery of $50 million in savings to customers next year.

Duke Energy Florida remains committed to finding cost-saving measures. The company is developing more solar energy sites, which do not rely on fuel, and completing efficiency upgrades at its natural gas plants to increase power production with the same amount of fuel.
