Dr. John Spencer Ellis Helps Men Rebuild After Divorce

A man finishes his divorce and everyone stops asking how he is doing. The assumption is that the difficult part ended when the legal part did. However, Dr. John Spencer Ellis, an internationally recognized authority on men's health, longevity, and human performance, says that assumption is backward. He notes that men who come to him 18 months later describe a common pattern: weight gain, broken sleep, a shorter temper, and a general sense that something changed without their noticing.

Ellis works with men over 40 who are rebuilding after major life transitions. He has coached accomplished men for more than three decades.

The research behind the pattern is well characterized. Two independent research teams, using different methods on different datasets, reached the same conclusion. Sbarra and colleagues, pooling 32 studies covering more than six million people, found a hazard ratio of 1.30 for mortality among divorced adults, with stronger effects in men. Shor and colleagues, analyzing 104 studies, arrived at the same figure independently. A systematic review of 7,881,040 individuals found divorced and separated men carried higher all-cause mortality, as well as stronger cancer and cardiovascular mortality risk, than divorced and separated women. The Japan Collaborative Cohort Study identified the same elevation in men and no equivalent trend in women.

The mechanism is well characterized. Sustained cortisol from a stressor that runs 18 to 24 months with no resolution point. Sleep degrading to six fragmented hours, which matters because the majority of a man's daily testosterone release occurs during sleep. Fat redistributing to the midsection, where the enzyme aromatase converts testosterone into estrogen. Alcohol intake rising quietly, which research repeatedly identifies as a male-typical response to relationship breakdown. Meanwhile, blood pressure, lipids, fasting glucose, and inflammatory markers drift without producing a single symptom.

Ellis notes that male distress in this period rarely looks like the clinical description. It presents as irritability, compulsive overwork, risk-taking, and withdrawal rather than visible sadness.

Dr. John Spencer Ellis brings an unusually wide range of training to the work. He holds two bachelor's degrees, in business and health science, an MBA, and a doctorate in education, plus 14 months of doctoral-level studies in naturopathic health education. His clinical training includes a license in radiological technology, a medical assisting certification with phlebotomy, and training in McKenzie rehabilitation. He holds 15 professional certifications spanning nutrition coaching, exercise rehabilitation, sleep science, brain health, clinical hypnotherapy, and, most recently, certification as a mental health coach.

The business side is equally relevant. Ellis spent 33 years as founder and CEO of four organizations, including the National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association, which he started in 1992 from a spare bedroom and built into one of the world's leading health and fitness education companies, serving 55 countries. He then deliberately simplified, selling the businesses, properties, and possessions that added complexity without value, and rebuilt around a simple, location-independent model.

Two coaching programs are available. The Health, Longevity and Aesthetic Optimization Program for Men 40+ is a 90-day personalized engagement. It begins with comprehensive intake covering health status, injury history, sleep, stress load, alcohol intake, and medications, followed by bloodwork guidance alongside the client's own physician. Training and nutrition are programmed to individual capacity, with functional testing including grip strength and gait speed at intake and retest. The protocol is deliberately sequenced so sleep and alcohol stabilize before training load increases. Twelve weekly one-on-one sessions provide the accountability that converts a plan into a habit.

The Escape the Rat Race Coaching Program addresses what Ellis calls the constraint behind the constraint. Divorce arrives with financial pressure, the instinct is to work harder, and that consumes the exact hours the health rebuild requires. The program converts decades of accumulated professional expertise into a simpler, more profitable, location-flexible income model, consulting, advisory work, training, licensing, or a productized service.

Many men run the two in sequence: restore the physiology first, so the larger financial and structural decisions get made by a man who is sleeping properly and thinking clearly.

Dr. John Spencer Ellis is a coach and educator, not a physician, attorney, or licensed therapist. He does not diagnose, treat, or prescribe, and his coaching is designed to work alongside licensed professional care.
