SHANNON, CLARE, IRELAND, October 13, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Dalian University of Technology’s Optoelectronic Engineering and Instrumentation Science School has published a comprehensive review on halide perovskite-based metasurfaces, a groundbreaking technology that combines the precise light-control capabilities of nanostructured surfaces with the active optical and electronic properties of perovskite materials.

Prof. Tun Cao’s group at Dalian University of Technology has been at the forefront of this research. The review, which is part of the journal Opto-Electronic Manufacturing, highlights two major development routes for halide perovskite metasurfaces. The first route integrates perovskites with conventional metallic or dielectric metasurfaces, enhancing local optical fields and light-matter interactions. The second route directly patterns perovskites into subwavelength structures, enabling the same material to perform both light manipulation and optoelectronic conversion, leading to more compact and highly integrated devices.

The review delves into the physical mechanisms that underpin these technologies, including Mie resonances, bound states in the continuum, strong light-matter coupling, and dynamic regulation induced by light, electricity, temperature, and compositional changes. These mechanisms are crucial for the development of applications such as light-emitting diodes, lasers, photodetection and imaging, perovskite solar cells, optical communications, quantum optics, and optical computing.

These technologies have the potential to revolutionize various sectors. For instance, they could lead to thinner displays with improved color and directional control, more sensitive imaging and environmental sensors, faster and lower-power optical communication systems, and more highly integrated photonic chips. In the energy field, precise control of light by metasurfaces may also improve light utilization and operational stability in solar-energy devices.

However, several challenges must be addressed before these technologies can be widely adopted. These include the long-term stability of perovskite materials, large-area and high-precision fabrication, device-to-device consistency, optical loss, electrical driving, and system-level integration. Prof. Tun Cao, a distinguished professor and doctoral supervisor at Dalian University of Technology, has made significant contributions to this field. He has published more than 140 SCI papers as a first or corresponding author, with over 5,440 citations. He also holds more than 60 authorized international and domestic invention patents.

The research group, based at the Liaoning Key Laboratory of Micro/Nano Optoelectronics and Intelligent Sensing, has undertaken over 30 projects, including National Key R&D Program projects, international cooperation projects, National Natural Science Foundation projects, and aerospace enterprise commissioned projects. More information about the group can be found on their university webpage (faculty.dlut.edu.cn/2010011065/zh_CN/index.htm).

The publication of this review underscores the growing importance of halide perovskite-based metasurfaces in the broader context of optoelectronics. As the technology continues to evolve, it is expected to play a critical role in advancing various industries, from consumer electronics to renewable energy.
