Crate.io AG, a newly established holding company in Vaduz, Liechtenstein, has taken ownership of CrateDB, the open-source real-time analytics database. This move marks a significant shift for the company, which previously had its headquarters in the United States but is now returning to Europe. The decision to bring CrateDB back to its European roots is part of a broader strategy to ensure full data sovereignty for its customers.
Founded in Dornbirn, Austria, Crate.io AG is the main developer behind CrateDB, a distributed SQL database designed for real-time analytics, IoT, AI/ML, and high-concurrency workloads. The company has seen a growing demand from critical infrastructure operators, regulated industries, and the public sector for full control over their data. With CrateDB now owned and governed in Europe, customers can build applications that are fully under their control, with the operational core of those applications governed by European law.
Robert Ekstrom, CEO of Crate.io AG, emphasized the importance of data sovereignty in today's digital landscape.
To support this strategic move, Crate.io AG has entered into a partnership with STACKIT, a European cloud provider. Through this partnership, users can now deploy a fully managed CrateDB cluster on STACKIT’s European infrastructure directly from CrateDB Cloud. Sebastian Utz, Founding Engineer and CTO of Crate.io, highlighted the benefits of this partnership.
CrateDB, known for its ability to serve live operational data to many concurrent applications, combining time-series data, text, and vectors in a single SQL query, is now poised to serve a broader European market. The company has a strong track record, with customers including global technology company ABB, beverage company Rauch, and video streaming technology company Bitmovin. With the backing of investors and the support of STACKIT, Crate.io AG is well-positioned to expand its presence in the European market.
The move to bring CrateDB back to Europe is part of a broader trend towards data sovereignty and control, particularly in industries where real-time data is critical. As the world becomes increasingly digital, the importance of where and how data is managed is becoming more significant. Crate.io AG's strategic shift is a response to this changing landscape, ensuring that its customers have the tools and infrastructure they need to maintain full control over their data.
