GILLETTE, Wyo., Sept. 28, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Cowboy Clean Fuels, a Wyoming-based climate-tech company, has secured its first carbon removal credit sale, marking a significant step in its entry into the durable carbon removal market. The company has sold its first CDR credit purchase for delivery in 2026, with the sale facilitated by Salesforce through its partner, Milkywire.
Cowboy Clean Fuels operates a unique biomass carbon removal and storage (BiCRS) pathway in the Powder River Basin. The process involves injecting agricultural processing residues into depleted coalbed methane reservoirs, where indigenous microorganisms anaerobically digest the biomass, generating renewable natural gas while permanently storing carbon dioxide. This methodology, developed by Cowboy Clean Fuels, adheres to the ISO 14064-2:2019 standard and ensures a permanence of more than 100 years.
The company's projects are certified under the Absolute Carbon Standard, developed by Absolute Climate, with credits issued through the C-Capsule registry operated by Evident, part of Xpansiv. Climate Vault Solutions has independently assessed the company's Triangle Unit project following a multi-phase technical review.
Cowboy Clean Fuels' operations leverage the extensive coalbed methane infrastructure and unmineable seam inventory in the Powder River Basin. This setup provides a distinctive combination of durable geologic storage, renewable gas production, and a resource base that can be utilized for decades.
The purchase is part of Salesforce's pledge to contract USD 100 million in durable carbon removal by 2030. Milkywire, an impact firm with eight years of experience in facilitating durable carbon removal purchases, has been instrumental in this transaction. Milkywire has facilitated purchases of more than $12 million of durable carbon removal across 45+ projects in more than 20 countries, and is a top-three global carbon removal buyer by project diversity.
Cowboy Clean Fuels' operations in the Powder River Basin build on existing coalbed methane infrastructure and the operational expertise of Wyoming's energy workforce. The project supports skilled employment in Campbell County and generates new revenue from infrastructure already in place. The company views its partnership with the county and the state as foundational to its long-term success.
The company is developing additional projects in the Powder River Basin and is currently contracting durable carbon removal volumes and carbon-neutral RNG supply. Verified credits are listed on-registry and available for immediate purchase. Cowboy Clean Fuels aims to become a leading provider of permanent, geologically stored carbon removal in the United States, using Wyoming's infrastructure, subsurface resources, and energy workforce to deliver verifiable durable CDR over the coming decades.
